چکیده

We examined long-term time series of stock status for the temperate tunas Pacific bluefin and albacore in the north Pacific, and characterized temporal changes in the stock status of both species through comparison with tropical tunas in the Western and Central Pacific. The temperate tunas appear to have historically experienced considerable fluctuation in stock status over a long period of time, whereas the stock status of tropical tunas with shorter exploitation histories are characterized by consistent decreases in stock sizes and increases in catches. Based on these features, we discuss appropriate management strategies such as the identification of candidate limit reference points (LRPs) for each tuna stock in the Western and Central Pacific, and suggest that LRPs based on historical stock sizes are worthy of consideration for temperate tunas in the North Pacific.

Mobility of tropical tunas and the implications for fisheries management

We apply an advection–diffusion reaction model to data from three different tuna tagging experiments in the western and central Pacific Ocean (WCPO) to reexamine the question of to what extent the population dynamics and spatial characteristics of tropical tunas require international cooperation for effective management. The median lifetime displacement of skipjack ranges from 420 to 470 nautic...

The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Should We “Fear the Fear”?; Comment on “The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?”

RLabonté et al entitle their paper in this issue of the International Journal of Health Policy and Management “The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?” Tantalisingly, they do not directly answer the question they pose, and in this commentary, we suggest that it is the wrong question; we should not ‘fear’ the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) at all, rather we should ...

Advancing Public Health on the Changing Global Trade and Investment Agenda; Comment on “The Trans-Pacific Partnership: Is It Everything We Feared for Health?”

Concerns regarding the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) have raised awareness about the negative public health impacts of trade and investment agreements. In the past decade, we have learned much about the implications of trade agreements for public health: reduced equity in access to health services; increased flows of unhealthy commodities; limits on access to medicines; and constrained policy...
